Discover the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço: A Scenic Hike on Madeira’s Eastern Tip

If you’re visiting Madeira and looking for a truly breathtaking hike, the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço should be at the top of your list. Located on the easternmost point of the island, this trail offers a completely different landscape from the lush forests and mountains found elsewhere on Madeira. Here, you’ll walk through a rugged volcanic peninsula with dramatic cliffs, panoramic sea views, and unique vegetation.

What Makes This Trail Special?

Unlike the island’s famous levadas that weave through green valleys, the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8) offers a more arid, rocky terrain with sweeping views over both the north and south coasts of the island. The combination of red and black volcanic rock, crashing Atlantic waves, and wind-sculpted cliffs creates a surreal and unforgettable atmosphere.

Along the way, you may spot rare plant species, local lizards, and seabirds nesting on the cliffs. On clear days, you can even see the nearby Desertas Islands and the island of Porto Santo in the distance.
